New, more animated avatar!

Testing:

Yes!

I don't know why it runs so fast, it didn't before I uploaded it.

Hmm...I couldn't say for sure, but I suspect whatever site you're uploading to sets all frames to be the same length.

Also:  You might want to edit your profile so it isn't stretching the image vertically, but that's up to you.

Heh. :D

That is pretty awesome... XD
(Even if something is making it run fast or it slightly vertically stretched in your avatar. :P )
That's coming a long way from the sprite you shared in the old forum.
I guess all of the recent sprite-making has paid off. ;)

I've developed a new method for sketching that is much faster and yields much smoother animations.

Plus, having all the previous sketches made these sketches go a lot faster.

Now comes the really tricky part. The stage 3 sketches is where I have to start mimicking DW's style of color, and shading.

Also, he looks so good stretched that I'm thinking about shortening his arms like that in the regular version.

EDIT:

I thought I knew how to do this, but apparently this board is different. How do I resize the image in my avatar?

Actually, it's a matter of configuration.
There are three options the forum can do in case of an externally-linked-by-URL avatar (as opposed to uploaded one).
Check the dimensions and reject if it's too large, use Javascript to check the dimensions and resize proportionally on-page if it's too large (caveat: if your browser has disabled Javascript and someone links to a over_9000 x over_9000 avatar it will be shown in full size screwing up the whole layout), or blindly stretch/bend all linked images to specified size via HTML.
(Admin -> Attachments and Avatars -> Avatar Settings -> If the avatar is too large)
Currently, this last option is active, but I'll risk Dragyn's wrath and switch it to "check size and refuse" - after all, your is of proper dimesions, 100x49, and forum's limit is 100x100.

Hmm...I thought I'd already switched that, or I'd have done that before saying anything...

Oops.

Here's some lineart for the next version. I'm not sure I like the chuff on his cowl. Does it look good, or should I take it back for revision before I get to coloring?

It's better to hear it all now, rather than later. Be cruel, if you would be kind.

EDIT:

It is a cowl.

Furthermore, it seems the foot movement in the follow through of the lunge is not smooth enough.

Thoughts?

His feet really do just sort of teleport.  More smoothness in that animation certainly wouldn't hurt, given how abrupt his forward lunge feels, here.

As for the cowl...I'm not sure.  I'm not really very good with cowls...

I've doubled the number of frames in the recovery on the lunging strike, to make his movements seem more smooth an natural.

I've also reduced the amount of work I'm putting into the swoosh trails for these prototypes. The engine will (eventually) do all the fading automatically, and I'm just dubbing them in here for effect.

I like the added frames. I can't decide on anything for you to do with the cowl, but I agree it just isn't quite right. Even if I can't put my finger on why.

I found it.

Somehow, my guidleines got messed up, so his neck disappears when he turns toward the camera.

The result is that his cowl moves downward and he seems shorter, but it isn't a matter of what shape it is, but where it's located.

I just need to move the head up and pad up the neck and shoulders properly, which is less easy than it sounds, but still easier than finding the problem in the first place.

This is probably a side effect of me being used to drawing isometric sprites, to the point that I have a lot of habits that pop up when I try to animate characters from profile.

Hm...
The added frames really did help the feet.
Heh.

As for the cowl...
I'd say that would help. The whole shape sort of changes as he turns toward the camera... the almost pointed top shrinks/rounds down. And the curve in the side that hangs from the top that is closest to the viewer becomes rounder, too. Some of that is expected with perspective change... but it might be too much? Or maybe the side nearest us is fine, what with the perspective change, but the one furthest away should curve more, too. I don't know. It just seems too round. And the opening grows and shrinks as he turns.

Maybe make some sketches on paper of what you think it should look like and try to make it line up on the animation after you have an idea?

Hm... a lot might be helped when/if you fill in the face-area with a darker color to give depth.

I think I like this one a lot more, though. :)

Coloring and shading come after I get the shapes right.

I have some better frames now, but I haven't yet had the time to throw them into the .gif and upload it.

A crazy thing is life.

Once I do that, I'll probably focus more on making more sketch frames, than touching up the ones we already have.  Right now, we need a large number of testing sprites more than I need a flashy avatar.

Flashy avatars are cool, but they don't make much of a game.

That said, I'm sure there's some game that can be played with flashy avatars...
