Slow Progress

April 10, 2015, 11:31:24 PM by Dragyn

Not much to say, but I have made some progress:

I rebuilt the animation engine (as mentioned earlier) and fixed the slowdown problem. Now I'm hunting a few bugs related to attacks not terminating properly if airborne or crouching, which are messing up other animations until you stop moving completely.

I did get the textChat and keyboardParser reimplemented, so that's good news. I don't have enough computers at the moment to test it properly, though.

I'm also slowly improving my codebase, making my job easier without making any changes to the program itself.

That's all from me.

Sprites and Animations

March 06, 2015, 05:48:25 PM by Dragyn

So I recently went and recreated the Sprite drawing functions, since they were something I had lost in the crash. I started work today on making a more advanced methodology for creating animations, which should allow me to make variable framerates within an animation, among other things.

While I was looking through the Character and Sprite code, I realized that Characters aren't using the Sprite code. They're just drawing directly--which means that all my Sprite optimizations aren't being used by the characters themselves, or any bullets or effects they create.

This is a potential slowdown problem, so my focus had to switch to finding a way to combine the two. Wish me luck!

Good News/Bad News

January 03, 2015, 03:34:31 AM by Dragyn

More good news than bad news today.

The good news is it doesn't look like I lost as much as I thought I had. The majority of my networking code still seems to be in place, although I did lose the Text Chat system, which includes my Keyboard Entry parser, so that's gonna' take a bit to rebuild. Further good news is the game compiles and plays again, and runs at 60 FPS again, as intended. I had to rewrite some of my Sprite draw function (the part that keeps it from drawing things you can't see and slowing down the system was part of what I lost, but as far as I can tell, the rest of the Sprite functions are intact). It wasn't a hard fix, though it took a bit to find the problem.

The bad news is that Monogame doesn't support the XNA pipeline completely yet, so if I want to add new fonts or sounds, that's going to take some trickery. Either that or I'm going to have to find an alternative sound engine, but that might be the better option, regardless.

Welcome to 2015 everybody! Let's make it a good one!

Oh dear...

So it seems I lost a bit more work than I thought I had with Shadow Wolf. A significant portion of the netcode didn't get backed up properly, and that hard drive is pretty much dead. Unless I can find a backup, I'll have to recreate most of that from scratch, which sucks.

On the other hand, I had to recreate the rest of the project already, since XNA is no longer supported by Microsoft, and is thus incompatible with Windows 8. So MonoGame is where I'll be working for now. Should make cross-platform support simpler down the road. Hopefully.

Read more and discuss this on the forum here.

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

Still no hard drive for me, but I've not been completely idle. Not sure how long it'll be before I can work on SW in earnest, though.

Have a safe and happy Halloween, everybody!

State of the Game, October 2014

Progress on SW continues slowly. As always, see the forum for more info.

Side note...there is a delay at the moment, as my hard drive died recently, and I've yet to replace it. Should be soon!

Dragyn Lives!

June 20, 2014, 09:38:24 PM by Dragyn

I finally did more work on Shadow Wolf, today. It's been nearly an entire year since I last posted anything about it. This both astounds and horrifies me.

On the plus side, I think I have netcode to a point where you can actually connect 2 computers without hard-coding in the IP Addresses, so that's something...still have to test it though.
