Click it, and you will be able to add more to it, or change it. That would be really useful if you could do that in messages....

When you exalt someone - they get one karma. When you smite them, one karma gets taken away.
The more karma you have, the more well liked you are. (Or, how much people are willing to give you karma points to show appreciation, that they just like them, or any other number of reasons.
You can only exalt someone once an hour - and I'm pretty sure the same goes for smiting --- I haven't done that yet, so I'm not positive.
