General / DF2014 succession game
« on: October 05, 2014, 09:23:38 AM »
Dwarf Fortress 2014 edition is now considered bugfix complete (any remaining bugs won't be fixed until the 2015 release, so get used to them kids.)

The fall semester is rolling along in most western countries, so our younger viewers are likely to have stable internet access, and a motive to procrastinate. That means that it's the time of year when things get slightly less dead around here.

That makes this the perfect (or at least optimal) time to start a Dwarf Succession game.

We do things a little different from the typical DF succession game.

First of all, there is no waiting list.
When your turn is done. Give the save file to whoever wants it and is available. It's more important to keep the thread moving than to ensure that people all get the same number of turns (many players decline their second or third turn anyhow).

There is no time limit. Traditionally games hand off after a player has played 1 in-game year, to ensure people don't wait too long. With a forum our size this miserly rationing is hardly necessary. Feel free to play for 5 years  if nobody is waiting or 5 months if you're not sure that running a fortress in winter is right for you, and you can convince another player to clean up the mess you made in the fall.

To ensure that our gameworld is smooth running for those with less powerful machines, we will be playing a smallish fortress zone in a small world.

To ensure there are plenty of trade partners, it'll have to be a fairly young world. (DF2014 has some balance issues were many most worlds fall to goblin blitzkrieg in the heroic age, leaving no playable races.)

I'm not going to waste time taking a poll over what you-all want to see in our site either. This generally degenerates into " I dunno, whatever you guys want to do." I'm going to pick a site based on what's fun, rather than what's smart.

I'll be back with an in-character introduction of our site.

I bet you've all been wondering why it's been deader around here than usual. :-\

It's not just the oncoming life of a family man keeping me from bringing you a weekly random quote and a sardonic response to all your favorite threads; something else is also missing. :(

Founder, comic drawer and engine coder DW seems more silent and standoffish than ever doesn't he? ???

That's because his drawing hand is injured.  :o :'( :(

He's going to heal up fine, and it doesn't look like he'll need any expensive surgery. (I hope we turn out to be right about this. You guys are the greatest fans we could ask for, especially if you are still here to read this, but I don't think there are really enough of you to support a medical sized donation drive.)

However, don't expect to see him around here much until he can type quickly and produce content. He's always shy about coming in here without some new content for the main site.

Thanks everyone for your support, and your participation in our little community.

General / The joy of evil.

For days, I've been trying to decide if I wanted to buy a Steam copy of Evil Genius, but I decided to wait and think it over some more. --even though it was only ten bucks.

Tonight it's on sale for 75% off, so I grabbed it.

Then I checked the other sales and ended up spending fifty bucks.

Valve you are the real evil geniuses.

Green Lantern is so bad.

It is honestly disturbingly awful.

I went in knowing it was going to be bad, but it is just constantly pathetic. It doesn't ever waste a chance to look sound or feel stupid.

It was so bad that it made me say some things that I may regret.

I got an extra day off today.

I don't get paid for it, but I really needed it, and I feel so much better now.

Have a bunch of double posts.

Shadow Wolf / Characters with Inertia
« on: March 28, 2011, 10:07:16 PM »
There's been a problem plaguing me and DW for a while now, and we finally got around to talking about it.

We both noticed that characters didn't seem to have any weight in Shadow wolf. Everyone sprung effortlessly into the air and then floated gently down, like an old balloon.

Today, we put in a number of changes to address this issue, and I think the problem has been brutally crushed.

Firstly, characters can optionally have a pre-jump script. This script plays out, and then ends by triggering the standard jump function. This allows characters to have any amount of animations or effects that occur right before their jump launches them. About a third of a second worth of animation really seems to give a sense of effort and power to a jump, without making the character feel terribly unwieldy.

We also added the ability to add custom effects and scripts when a character lands. Thus far we just created a simple dust cloud, and spawned a little one whenever Black lands hard, and a larger one when she dive kicks the ground. Mitz is a tiny little forest fairy, so he still springs into the air and prances around like a tiny, hairy ballet dancer. (Sometimes it's the exception that gives meaning to the rule.) In the long run, the potential is pretty vast, and I'm burning with ideas to use this for.

Combined with the knockback and stun effects we were already working on, this will give characters a real sense of weight, which will in turn give attacks that are strong enough to throw them back a real feeling of power.

General / What have you been playing?
« on: March 17, 2011, 04:48:42 AM »
I recently bought and completed Guilty Gear 2: Overture.

Unlike other GG titles, Overture is a 3D tactical brawler, similar to Brutal Legend, Samurai Warriors and Bladestorm.

The single player campaign is short, but felt about the right difficulty, such that only a couple of challenges overstayed their welcome.

The characters felt well differentiated, and I found myself wishing I got to play as some of them more. Ky get's particularly short shrift, he becomes an NPC that you must escort and protect, rather than a playable character, when he gains his most potent abilities. You never really get to play as Valentine or Paradigm, but they're lame, so I don't care.

Positioning troops and then supporting them with your own might is paramount on some levels, but other times it's just you against the hordes, with nothing but your own skills to keep you alive.

Shadow Wolf / Things that can happen. [Suggestions]
« on: March 01, 2011, 09:58:40 PM »
There's a lot of work (a veritable ocean) yet to be done with scripts and triggers yet, but that just means there's more room to adjust the plans, per your input.

Beyond the obvious "If Object X enters Area Y, run MapScript 12" and "Whenever Object A is activated, run CharacterScript 32," is there anything you'd like to see in the way of event triggers.

Also, character special moves are basically just complex scripts that play out over a short period of time, so if there are any must have functions that you want to see characters able to invoke, we'd love to hear about them.

Moving characters, causing and removing damage, adding status effects, and changing character specific variable (i.e. setting up a two part combo, swapping the character for another type, or switching to an alternate form of mobility) are all just the basics. What's the craziest thing you might want to see happen? I especially want to hear about potentially problematic abilities for characters.

Arts / Using art for evil.

GFWL was giving away Age of Empires 3 for ten cents a few days ago.

With the horror stories floating around, I'm actually kind of glad I don't have a dime to spare.

Anyway, this just came to me, so I sketched it up and uploaded it. Bam! Just like that.

General / Billy Versus Snakeman! Shameless plugging! Pizza Delivery!
« on: November 08, 2010, 03:48:17 AM »
So, I'm recruiting for my BvS village again.

Wait! It's different this time.

I'm not scraping by in some abandoned, backwater slum, desperate to find people to help rebuild. I'm a valued citizen in Muramasa! This is an Epic, Immortal Realm, with all the cool toys a bright-eyed, young Genin (n00b Ninja) could ask for. Our Tax rates are modest, our infrastructure is expanding rapidly, and our leaders are savvy and fearsome.

However, we are in search of new villagers. A lot of our non-talking lurker ninjas have left the village or become idle in the past several months, and we haven't been able to drawn in any fresh genin to replace them. We are not in a crisis by any means, but Zatoichi (our respected shadow lord) has decided to deal with the problem before it becomes a problem, and launched a recruiting drive.

Disclaimer: Our village does have two overriding flaws that are the likely cause of this problem. We have a forum that we never really use. (It's something of a joke on our in-game bulletin board, where we do all our joking and discussion.) --and some of our villagers behave a little crazy; the occasional bout of bizarre inside jokes or borderline tasteless humor breaks out, which tends to scare away recent arrivals.

Likewise, the game isn't perfect for everyone. It's not a very visual game (except compared to text games, like MUDs MOOs and Roguelikes, against which it wins cleanly), and some of the quests (particularly the early game ally quests) can be more hassle than they really need to be. However, the writing is often funny, the various minigames are fun to unlock, and I love it to bits.

Do you want to a Ninja/Soul Reaper/Super Hero/Desert Survivalist/Cyber Soldier/Burger Joint Employee/Pizza Delivery Person?

Behold the gateway to paradise! (If you sign up an account using my banner I get a little bonus, when you rank up. ;))

In all seriousness, I really think this is one of the best browser based MMOs on the market, and if you know a better one, I want to hear about it.

General / Hamachi is great.
« on: October 14, 2010, 08:02:06 AM »
Hamachi is basically one of the greatest applications ever written.

Among other things, it turns Windows Vista into a viable platform for LAN gamers such as myself. This is like transmuting shower mildew into iridium/steel alloy knives.

Normally mixing different versions of windows on a network is like a dysfunctional and potentially violent family reunion, but Hamachi somehow manages to make all these computers exchange information without trying to kill themselves.

Plus, you can add people to your LAN over the internet (the thing it is actually designed to do). This is great for when your cousin in the next town wants to join your SWAT 4 party.

The only downside to Hamachi is that the fear of it is causing many publishers to drop LAN play entirely. The fear that people might be able to play over the net, without authenticating with their servers, is pushing people in power to take rash actions. So long as it exists they will fear it's potential for evil (piracy hurting sales), so you might as well it for good(old-school, multiplayer gaming with less hassle).

Shadow Wolf / Combat Complexity
« on: October 11, 2010, 04:37:16 PM »
I'm trying to gather some data on how people feel about different aspect of Shadow Wolf, so I can discuss those issues more intellegently with DW.

First up is combat system complexity; How much does it interest you, and how much is too much?

You can see the tally and change your vote at any time, so if something changes your mind, feel free to change your answer.

Additionally, I'd love to see some posts about why you voted how you did, especially if you change your answer.
